SUMOKIDS

For more than 20 years we have been faithfully bringing Sumo’s positive teachings to thousands of children in North America. Sumo teaches life principles and promotes non-violent approaches to conflict.

Sumo calls for ‘doing your best at all you do’ and nurtures respect. At a time in our society when young people are hungering for adult mentorship and direction, Sumokids and the Sumorai Mascots coaches have answered the call for help.

For the last 15 years, we have been voluntarily putting the Sumokids philosophy to the test in a pilot program in Buffalo NY, Niagara Falls NY, Washington DC, and Toronto Canada, to address school difficulties such as fighting, poor grades, high suspension rates, lack of attendance, low self-esteem, personal relationships with peers, and bullying.

In the pilot program, we worked with a mix of at-risk/underprivileged students – such as students with different needs, special behavioral problems, and learning disabilities – as well as students with stable backgrounds and behavioral characteristics.

Teachers and parents completed a survey that clearly demonstrated the positive feeling generated by having the children participate in the Sumokids Imitative. Those surveyed unanimously felt that their children’s attitude, attendance, and grades improved as a result of their participation.

The program has been successfully field-tested since 2005, and is now ready for expansion.
