Sumorai Kids World Festival

The Sumorai Kids World Festival training program focuses on

balancing the subconscious and conscious minds of young people.

The training station drills reach and maintain that balance by

getting the subconscious and conscious minds to work together.

The training drills stress relaxation while focusing on a task.

 

1. DURATION: 45 minute sessions - typical introduction course lessons

 

2. DESCRIPTION: The Sumorai Kids World Festival Teaching/Training Initiative is a sports education festival that weaves the traditions and values of the ancient sport of Sumo with elements of contemporary youth culture into an exciting adventure. The program is designed to engage students in a fun program that teaches them self-discipline, respect, dignity, physical fitness and life skills that they can use throughout their lives.

 

3. GOALS: To provide a stimulating and educational experience that changes the students’ perspectives.

 

4. OBJECTIVES:

  • To provide students with meaningful positive supervision and mentoring that teaches how to solve conflict situations in a non-violent manner.

  • To improve the students’ balance, flexibility, coordination, aerobic fitness, and physical strength with inherent improvement in self-confidence and concentration.

  • To develop a standard of values for students and provide programs for schools and community organizations based on the tenets of Sumo and personalized learning.

  • To provide a cultural diversity that breeds innovative problem solving and a new conceptualized vision for the future.

  • Teach and demonstrate how to: control emotion and actions; show honor and respect; win with courtesy and lose with dignity and grace; cultivate patience; have empathy. 

 

5. MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • A Wall

  • Floor Space

  • Wrestling mats  

 

6. METHOD: The master coach will train coaches, volunteers, students, and Sumorai Mascots to train other students; class will be divided into three or four groups that will go through the nine stations. 

 

7. ASSESSMENT:

  • Test student’s ability to learn:

  • Goal-setting

  • The opening ceremony

  • Japanese words, phrases and counting

  • Guiding principles

  • Physical fundamentals of Sumo

  • How to win with courtesy and lose with dignity and grace

  • How to control their emotions and actions

  • Empathy

  • From the training station drills, participants will learn the following three important lessons:

    • How to control their emotions and actions and how to show the same degree of politeness in Sumo and in their daily lives

  •  

  • All students participate in the Sumo Rituals. Each session starts with an opening ceremony, followed by stretching exercises and Sumo drills. The session ends with a closing ceremony.
